Francis Crossley Alms-House (Halifax)
Francis Crossley Alms-House (Halifax)
One of two groups of almshouses built by the Crossleys. These almshouses, at Margaret Street, just below Belle Vue, are the earlier of the two and were designed by Roger Ives in a domestic neo-Gothic style. Built in 1855 for Sir Francis Crossley, Bart, MP and brother Joseph Crossley (sons of John Crossley, Dean Clough founder) near to People's Park, to provide accommodation for the elderly. In addition to endowing the building, Francis undertook to provide £500 a year to cover running expenses and a small income for the residents.

Living in the almshouses was conditional upon being at least 60 years old, being without adequate means of support, being of good character, having had a religious upbringing, and being incapacitated from work by age, disease or infirmity. Each house has a living room, bedroom, cellar and pantry and one or two have an additional storey with more rooms.

Grade II Listed Building. Still standing 2005.
